My late husband, Colonel Francis Payne, formerly Quartermaster General, died in September last, after an illness of nearly three years, leaving anxious relatives supervised for being unable & saving money owing to the circumstances hereafter detailed.

My Husband, after 27 years in the Army, during which he was employed in various confidential appointments in India, with local experience in the field, and held confidential appointments in Hong Kong, with the prospect of higher employment, proceeded to China in 1840 on the staff of Major General de la Motte, and on the capture of Chusan in July 1840, was appointed Chief Magistrate of that Island.
